The Nuclear Energy Revolution: A Bold Step Forward

In a groundbreaking development, construction has commenced on TRISO-X's TX-1 advanced nuclear fuel fabrication facility, marking a pivotal moment in the evolution of nuclear energy. This facility, located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, is set to become the first of its kind in the USA, exclusively dedicated to manufacturing fuel for advanced small modular reactors (SMRs).

But here's where it gets controversial... The TX-1 plant will produce proprietary tristructural-isotropic (TRISO) fuel, which is at the heart of the Xe-100, a high-temperature gas-cooled modular reactor. This project is supported by the US Department of Energy's (DOE) Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program (ARDP), providing significant funding for the Xe-100 demonstration and the TX-1 fuel fabrication facility.

In August, TRISO-X made a significant announcement, selecting Clark Construction Group to complete the building phase of TX-1 for a substantial sum. Simultaneously, they received DOE approval for additional funding to procure critical equipment, ensuring the project's timely completion.

TX-1 is the first of two TRISO manufacturing facilities planned for Oak Ridge, and it holds a unique distinction. It will be the first Category II Fuel Fabrication Facility licensed by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in the USA, with an impressive estimated output of 5 tonnes of uranium or 700,000 TRISO pebbles annually, sufficient to fuel up to 11 Xe-100 reactors.

And this is the part most people miss... The NRC categorizes special nuclear materials and the facilities that handle them based on their strategic significance and potential for use in nuclear weapons. Category II materials, like those at TX-1, are considered to have moderate strategic significance. This categorization is crucial as it determines the physical security and safeguards required by the NRC.

Currently, the USA has a handful of licensed fuel fabrication plants, with three categorized as Category III, processing low-enriched uranium. Two plants are licensed as Category I, capable of producing high-enriched uranium fuel, often for government contracts. The development of SMRs requires high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU), which must be fabricated in Category II-licensed facilities like TX-1. The NRC has received multiple applications from different companies for such plants.

TRISO-X President Joel Duling expressed the significance of this milestone, stating, "The start of vertical construction brings us closer to realizing our ambitious vision for the future of nuclear energy. TX-1's construction symbolizes our team's unwavering commitment to making this transformative project a reality in a matter of years, not decades."
