Heartbreak struck the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday night as they fell to the Edmonton Oilers, the reigning two-time Western Conference champions, with a final score of 2-1 in overtime. This tight, low-scoring affair left fans on the edge of their seats, showcasing the Flyers' grit and determination.
Jack Roslovic sealed the Oilers' victory with a goal during a 2-on-0 opportunity after a costly turnover by Cam York. The Flyers' record in one-goal games now stands at 4-3-3, with this being their seventh overtime contest.
Coach Rick Tocchet acknowledged the team's need to learn from these close calls, emphasizing the importance of puck possession in overtime. Travis Konecny appeared to have scored a game-winning goal with just 23.5 seconds left in regulation, but a league review overturned the call due to an offside penalty on Owen Tippett. "I have to be more patient, I guess," Tippett admitted.
The Flyers, known for their defensive style, entered the game with the third-fewest shots per game in the NHL, averaging 24.8 shots. They managed only six shots by the midpoint of the game. However, Matvei Michkov injected some energy, scoring a crucial power-play goal in the second period to tie the game.
Despite the loss, the Flyers extended their point streak to four games (2-0-2). Coach Tocchet expressed pride in the team's performance, especially considering the pre-season expectations of finishing last in the standings.
The Oilers outshot the Flyers 25-11 through two periods.
But here's where it gets controversial... The Flyers face the Oilers again on January 3rd, this time on the road against the formidable Western Conference champions.
Dan Vladar delivered another stellar performance in goal, saving 30 out of 32 shots. The 28-year-old goalie has conceded two or fewer goals in eight of his ten starts. A late collision with Mattias Janmark sparked a brief confrontation, leading to a Flyers power play that they couldn't capitalize on.
The Oilers struck first with a goal from Evan Bouchard, assisted by the three-time MVP Connor McDavid. The Flyers have had some success in containing McDavid, particularly at home, where they hold a 6-2-1 record against his Oilers teams, limiting him to just 10 points in nine games.
And this is the part most people miss... However, McDavid has dominated the Flyers in Edmonton, amassing 24 points in nine games, with the Flyers only winning 2 of those games. Coach Tocchet highlighted the strategy of disrupting McDavid's rhythm by forcing him to play defense, recognizing his exceptional talent.
Oilers' goalie Stuart Skinner stopped 20 of the Flyers' 21 shots.
Matvei Michkov's recent form is a bright spot, with goals in three consecutive games. The 20-year-old winger now has four goals and nine points this season, showing flashes of the dynamic scorer he was last season.
Tyson Foerster returned to the lineup after recovering from a blocked shot, while Carl Grundstrom was sent to the AHL affiliate Lehigh Valley to make room on the roster. Foerster rejoined his regular line with Noah Cates and Bobby Brink.
